My original idea for my group portrait was to shoot a humorous family portrait however once looking at my previous images for my editorial and corporate I decided to change the theme.  I came to the conclusion to photograph three elder sisters together nice and close.  I photographed my friend Renae and her two sisters Angela and Daniella.  I asked them to all wear there hair back and to wear strapless shirts.  This way I would create a timeless portrait.  No fashionable clothing or edgy haircuts to time and eventually look dated.
I knew that having them tight and close would be hard to light.  I was after bold and strong lighting, I was only focusing on smooth beautiful light on there faces.  The lighting on the shoulders and chest never bothered me.

I used two soft boxes at the front to light the faces and a backlight to slightly separate the girls from the background.  I lowered the light to make this very subtle.

Looking at these photos I am  very confused as to which is my favourite.  The favourite will be handed in for my major first folio.  At this present time I am leaning towards either images 5 or 6.  Therefore, I will be asking many people for there opinions and favourites.  Below is some of the comments I have received.

  1. Kelly,

001 is IMO the best of them,

  2. Hi Kelly.

I liked image 8 the most as it is the one where all three have fairly nice expressions. Although I would whiten the girls eyes a bit as they look very pink. And the girl on the left looks a bit too soft and not as well focussed as the other 2. Not sure if you can do anything about that.

The ones with their eyes closed looked too forced

  3. I'm not a photographer at all, I just know what I like.... number 7 for me. how cool are the eyes on all 3

  4. Kelly,

For composition and lighting I would say image 003 is the preferred shot except for two things, firstly there is what I guess is a small part of the dress for the model on the left visible on the bottom left of the image, it's distracting once you see it! The other is the nose ring for the model in the centre; this is not always visible but considering the excellent complexion of all three models it does stand out...

    My 2c worth anyway!

    Cheers!

  6. 007,
Looks natural. lighting is softer, eyes on the girl on the left look like they could be sharpened though.

    or 001

  7. Definately 6. All the ones with the eyes open, the girl on the left is quite soft compared to the other two.
Plus the composition in 6 is really cool. I'm drawn to the eyes of the girl on the right and foloow their eyes down to the bracelets.
    The colours work too.

  8. 008 is defiantly the best shot.

They are all great pics. I am guessing the lady in the middle is mum or older sister? I like that her eye line is higher in pic 008 than the two younger girls.

    Hope this helps

P.S this is my rookie opinion...

    Thanks & Regards

  11. 'd go with number 3 personally Kelly.

I feel this one has the best separation between the hair colour and background.
I also feel the flash on the centre ladies forehead is better controlled on this shot whereas on other shots its a bit hot.
I prefer the open eyes to the closed as your instructor can see the catchlights in the eyes and the fact you used a main (key) light plus a fill light.
I'm not a fan of the wet look as there's a lot of specular highlights that are blown out on that one.

Good luck, you've done a great job, well done.

  12. Kelly,

I like the concept you have used, I would say 003 has the best of the facial expressions as some of the others look a little too strained. 003 just needs a crop or clone done to hide the the black bra/top that's has just snuck in in the bottom left corner. Possibly also take the exposure down a nudge as well.

001 could work as well but I think its a little over exposed as well.

007 to 011 don't really work for me, I noticed it looks like your models have just jumped out of the shower.

Hope this helps and good luck with the assignment!

  15. Kelly,

006 - well composed, the space to the left leads the eye to the subjects. Facial expressions and body postures and the composition displays intimacy between the three.

  16. 7 would be the best, but the eyes, the eyes! They are so bloodshot, so whiten them and see if you can do some local sharpening on the outer girls eyes, as they border on the area of acceptable focus. Also need some work on hot spots, especially the forehead of the centre model.
I am not sure about 5 and 6. If you had of had their eyes open, the framing and negative space would've been a killer shot. But saying that, you would have to drop the floating hand, with no connections.

    This is my opinion

  17. Good morning Kelly

I nominate number 3. I really like how the models all appear very relaxed, depth of field has the rear of their shoulders lightly softened but their eyes are all very sharp.

    Good luck with the project

    Kind regards

  18. Kelly,
My favourite would be 005. I think the intimacy is palpable and the expressions on their faces are natural and really make the shot speak. The lighting is also suited to this pose and doesn't give harsh shadows like in some of the others. Highlights in the hair and the inclusion of the bracelets in the corner are all plusses for me. Nice work.

The other shot I liked was 007. The focal point is perfect and they are all in a natural pose (it may not have felt that way to them at the time). Unfortunately the younger model is a little out of focus and the whites of their eyes are a little red (maybe from posing for so long under flash:-) If you could fix the colour issue in post it would be a great photo.

    That's my opinion.

  19. Hi Kelly,

From a hacks perspective, 004 is great. The eyes closed works very well though the image could be abit sharper.

Look forward to more of your work.

  20. Hi Kelly,

I would go for 003 but clone or crop the black top from the bottom left corner and remove the white hilight from the middle lady's nose. It looks like a nose stud in some shots and isn't there in others.

  21. Think it was a good idea to pick the girls, its almost like a family portrait, has a warm feel with a kind of genuine sort of sisterly love feel to the picture.

  22. They all look awesome

I like the ones with their hair pulled back better..

My favourite one is the one where they all have their eyes closed and Danielle has her arm across Renae and angela..

  23. I like the compositions of 1 and 9. Not knowing what the assignment is, unsure of what PP you are allowed to do - these stand out for me because of the eyes, and body positions.

    Good luck Kelly...

  27. 6 was my pick too. Good eye follow line top right to bottom left. Eyes through to bracelets.
Also, in the other ones the sharpness of the eyes of the lady on the left is much softer than the other two ladies.

  28. +1 for 008 -- it has the most "smiling eyes", though they all appear a little bloodshot/teary?!?

  29. +1 for me too.

I'd go with 8, then 1 in that order.

  31. #6 then #8 for me too - I like the reference to the three muses (or was it fates?) implied in #6 and I too like the way the eye is led from the bracelets to the heads

  33. #3 most natural looking poses and colour/lighting but first remove the glimpse of black cloth at the bottom LH corner AND also clone out the spot on the nostril of the middle lady!

  34. Personally I found the composition of #7 to be the best, the eye line is good, everyone has the nice, same, smile, and as a 'group' shot it works as it really brings the similarities between the three to the fore. It feels natural and relaxed. I found #6 to be a little staged.

  35. When I first looked, #4 stood out for me.

I've since succumbed to peer pressure and am following the crowd with #6.
